If a site is not level, such as what may be found when ones' property is located on a hill or slope, or when the pool is to be built level with a raised patio or raised decking area, it may be necessary to build most of, if not all of the pool, above the ground.

In these cases , the pool structure would not receive any lateral support from any adjacent ground, and we would need to double steel reinforce the Gunite structure and sometimes double the thickness of our Gunite, to become what we would call a free-standing structural pool.

In cases such as these, we would employ the services of our preferred structural engineer, who would either design or endorse our design, depending on its complexity, something which we have done many times in the past, and has won us the Engineering Award on numerous occasions at the NSPI annual pool-awards. 

With the guidance of our engineer, we have also built many pools into filled ground, by building the entire pool on mass Gunite piles, founded into solid ground found below the uncompacted fill.

Tackling a high water table , or low lying property:

Many areas on the Cape Peninsula are considered low lying and are susceptible to a high water table for large portions of the year. As a matter of fact, most of the cape flats areas from Muizenberg right across the peninsula, to Observatory have a water table between 1 &  2 meters below the surface for a good part of the year. Similarly, many of the more lush parts of the Southern Suburbs, are known for their  more abundant rainfall and are also subject to a fluctuating high water table, especially once the cold fronts of winter start rolling in.

This can seriously impact or even halt the installation of some other forms of pool construction.  Fortunately, Gunite is an application that is applied quickly. This attribute allows us to install the wet works, or cement structure, in a matter of hours, instead of weeks, making the water table far easier to deal with. In fact , our average medium sized Gunite pool is shot into place in the course of 1 day.

We then only need to dry the area for another 24 hours, to allow the cement to cure, after which the water table can once again be allowed into the pool structure and can actually strengthen it. 

When installing a Gunite pool in a low lying area with a high water table, we simply pump out the excess water, using a submersible pump, which we place into a a stone filled sump sometimes joined to a stone bed or stone filled veins on the floor of the excavation of the pool.

This prevents our excavated hole from being flooded by ground water and allows us to complete the steel framework and Gunite cement application, without too much difficulty. The drainage hole with its corresponding submersible pump in the deep end of the pool can then be utilised for the duration of the project to remove excess water if need be. 

 The hole is of course is sealed, just prior to finishing and filling the pool . This method has allowed us to install pools directly adjacent to vleis, rivers and streams throughout the peninsula in many water-abundant areas such as Scarborough, Hout Bay, Newlands , Bishopscourt, Constantia  as well as sea level properties from Simonstown to Melkbostrand.
